Business development at Burges Salmon is all about working collaboratively with our lawyers. You won't be hitting the phones to make sales calls or sending out a hundred emails a day; you will be developing strategies and coaching lawyers to talk about their achievements. You will be helping them to reach out to new clients, whilst maintaining existing relationships. Above all you will provide your expertise, guidance and advice on all matters relating to business development. Your primary focus will be supporting lawyers in the Corporate, Banking and Restructuring teams with their business development responsibilities, including developing marketing plans. You will develop a good understanding of the market and sector issues and use your commercial knowledge to contribute new ideas. Working closely with the lawyers you will be identifying and developing new business opportunities. You will be based in a team of business development professionals, who form part of the wider marketing department at the firm. We do everything in-house so your colleagues in PR, communications, events, graphic design and digital marketing are all in the same open plan office. We are passionate about developing our people and within the business development team we have a structured and accessible development plan to ensure you know exactly what is expected and how you can progress. You will have previous business development experience. This will ideally be gained from a professional services organisation but not necessarily within the legal sector. You are not expected to be an expert in law (that's what the lawyers do!) Having said that you will develop a good understanding of the market and sector issues, to ensure your advice and guidance is always commercially valuable. Your ability to develop your professional networks will be absolutely key, as you will be relied upon to spot business opportunities. You can expect to be busy and challenged - no day will ever be the same. Responsibilities can range from supporting pitch and tender production to managing CRM plans. As part of the wider marketing department you will also be involved in firm wide initiatives such as directory submissions and award entries. You will be personable, professional, diplomatic and creative. You will have excellent communication skills, be proactive in your approach and genuinely enthusiastic about delivering innovative business development activities.
