The Head of IT is responsible for the strategic direction, development, implementation and overall planning and execution of Information Technology functions to ensure a stable, consistent and secure user experience whilst ensuring technology aligns to the demand of business growth.

Working closely with advocacy staff to assess and address user and practice needs for technology areas that include the full range of information systems and telecommunications, the role will be required to determine requirements, recommend practical solutions and lead firm-wide efforts in innovation and improve the effective use of technology, whilst at all times ensuring the most cost effective IT operation.

This role is based in our Southampton office. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Assess complex practice needs presented by the advocacy staff, practice heads and partners and recommends technical solutions;
  • Ensure the consistency and maintainability of existing applications by creating, maintaining, and enforcing standards / procedures for implementing technical solutions;
  • Ensure adequate support and development of existing practice applications;
  • Direct operations in executing production tasks according to a documented schedule that meets or exceeds customer expectations;
  • Produce detailed time-lines for each technical solution or application release and implements effective project control by monitoring progress;
  • Direct and prioritises the work load of subordinate personnel;
  • Provide governance to all designs, code, plans and test scripts where applicable;
  • Approve business requirements prior to the technical solution;
  • Participate on all hardware and software evaluations and maintains vendor contracts;
  • Represent the IT function at partner board review meetings when appropriate;
  • Perform liaison duties between users, partners, operations, developers, external partners and service providers;
  • Perform IT personnel management; including hiring, training, evaluation (yearly reviews, personal development plans), mentoring, guidance, discipline and discharge;
  • Develop operating framework, standard operating procedures, good practices and policies;
  • Oversee the provision of end-user services, including help desk and technical support services;
  • Manage financial aspects of the IT Division, including purchasing, budgeting, and budget review;

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • IT Operations and Programme Management; 
  • Team and people management.

Essential: 

  • Degree in computer science or related field or related experience; 
  • Minimum of ten years of experience within information technology; 
  • Experience in the most current technologies used in the industry; 
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as an IT Manager or a member of a senior leadership team; 
  • Minimum 3 years' experience of IT budget management.

Desirable: 

  • Management / leadership training; 
  • Minimum of twenty years of experience within information technology; 
  • Experience in the most current technologies and cloud services used in the industry; 
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Head of IT or IT Director; 
  • Minimum 5 years' experience of IT budget management
