The Team


Reporting to the Head of Human Resources - London, the role holder is responsible for providing expertise in all matters relating to employee relations, ensuring the firm maintains a positive employee relations framework and remains compliant with best practice and employment law.



The Role


Dispute Resolution


  • Take the lead in the resolution of employee issues including grievances and disciplinary matters, in conjunction with relevant HR Business Managers and Advisors
  • Responsible for managing large scale reorganisations including TUPE transfers and similar projects
  • Provide expert advice to HR colleagues and the business in disciplinary matters including conducting disciplinary investigations as and when necessary
  • Take the lead in managing individual casework of a complex and high profile nature and oversee colleagues in the management of less complex and low risk cases
  • Assist in the management of Flexible Working applications and appeals providing advice or active participation as required
  • Provide first level advice on the content of settlement agreements to others in HR as required and take responsibility for negotiating these directly from time to time
  • Work with counsel to ensure that litigation is managed effectively.

Knowledge Management


  • Ensure that after a major employee relations case a de-briefing takes place with the relevant internal parties and lessons learnt are acted upon
  • Develop a close working relationship with the in-house employment team, and external counsel, so that the HR team are provided with relevant information and briefings as required
  • Keep abreast of external developments (legal, political, social) and ensure these are being factored in to how Norton Rose Fulbright conducts its business
  • Manage a central register of individual casework to help the practice monitor the ER landscape Review and report on this information on an annual basis drawing conclusions and making recommendations as appropriate
  • Act as the knowledge “hub” for employment law and ER issues ensuring that relevant information is circulated to the team, and briefings provided, so that they keep up to date with the ER agenda.

Risk Management


  • Act as the liaison point with the Compliance team and General Counsel and ensure that all documentation and information that HR provides to employees is relevant and up-to-date
  • Respond to changes in employment law in a timely manner and ensure that the business is notified of the implications of these changes and that HR are properly briefed and appropriate changes embedded into HR systems, processes and policies
  • Manage the Risk Audit ensuring that appropriate action is taken where gaps in our policy or practice is identified.

Communication

  • Assess the impact of restructures, TUPE transfers and similar projects on employment relations.

  • Working with key stakeholders, ensure that appropriate employee communications strategies are in place in order to maintain positive employment relations and Norton Rose Fulbright’s employer brand

  • Ensure that, as appropriate, partners, heads of departments and line managers, are equipped to deal with employee relations issues that arise as a consequence of change programmes

  • Ensure that internal and external communications in relation to change programmes are compliant with employment law obligations.


    Employee Relations Framework

  • Ensure that all contracts of employment are reviewed regularly to ensure that they remain legally compliant and the core content runs through all contracts
  • Ensure the terms and conditions booklet is kept up to date both in hard copy form and on the intranet
  • Ensure that the standard letters that exist in Worksite for employee relations matters are up-to-date and that HR staff are trained to i) use the correct version and ii) to tailor these letters to take account of special circumstances
  • Ensure all relevant policies are kept up to date.

Liaison with Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) and Law Society 


  • Develop a deep understanding of the SRA's requirements for practising solicitors (E & W and those qualifying in other jurisdictions) and work with Compliance to ensure that Norton Rose Fulbright fulfils its regulatory requirements
  • Act as the "go to" person in HR with regard to ad hoc questions concerning the SRA's requirements
  • Oversee the annual practising certificate renewal process working closely with the Global Service Centre and wider HR team in implementing this exercise. 

Immigration


  • Work with the Global Mobility Advisor to ensure that the firm conforms to UK Immigration legislation and act as a "sounding board" to that postholder when discussing immigration related issues
  • Ensure that both HR and the business are aware of the implications of immigration legislation when dealing with, for example, recruitment and secondments
  • In conjunction with the Global Mobility Advisor carry out regular audits of HR records to ensure that the firm is complying with its requirements
  • Liaise with the UK Visas & Immigration Service as appropriate in preparation for any audit that they carry out
  • Ensure that our external immigration lawyers are providing Norton Rose Fulbright with a quality, cost effective service.

Policy Development


  • Take the lead on ER projects with HR colleagues in our international offices across the practice to ensure that our programmes are as integrated as possible (local employment laws permitting)
  • Write new policies that are required from time to time and effect their implementation in a timely and efficient manner.

Skills and Experience Required


  • An employee relations specialist or a HR Manager who has had significant experience of employee relations
  • Demonstrable experience of understanding and applying employment law
  • Experience of managing large scale ER projects (e.g. reorganisations, TUPE transfers etc)
  • A methodical, systematic, organised approach to work with a project management mindset.
