The team

The Quality & Risk Team offers advice and help with matter management best practice, professional & regulatory compliance, complaints & claims handling and the firm’s library & information services. The team is also responsible for developing and managing systems & controls to help manage risk, working closely with Simon Holdsworth, as Managing Partner who is also the firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP).

Purpose of the role

  • Manage a programme of IT development projects
  • Act as the conduit between the customer community and software developers to assist in identifying, designing and delivering improved legal technology to Thrings
  • Project management of delivery of agreed developments including validating that the solution does meet customer needs and achieves the business objectives
  • Develop a detailed understanding of our core legal applications, especially Lawman (our PMS, DMS, CMS) and other CMS systems and legal technology in use in the firm in order to develop these technologies into deliverable business solutions
  • The role will involve working closely with our internal multi-disciplinary Lawman Development Group and other key stakeholders to carry out thorough analysis of business needs and user requirements and develop these into functional requirements and clear project plans
  • Liaison with our external Lawman Developers (Timeslice) to identify suitable existing functionality and/or opportunities to customise and adapt the product to meet the business requirements
  • Organise and manage regular meetings of the Lawman Development Group and Project Sub-Team


Please note this is a 12 month FTC

  • Primary responsibility for managing a programme of projects
  • Primary responsibility for eliciting, analysing, validating, specifying, verifying, and managing the real needs of the project stakeholders, including customers and end users
  • Develop expert skills in the IT systems used in the firm so as to be able to customise and adapt the packages in order to provide business solutions to Thrings and identify opportunities for more effective/better use
  • Work with the project sponsor(s) to document the project’s business requirements, produce project plans and manage project progress to agreed requirements and deadlines
  • Lead requirements analysis and verification, write requirements specifications and translate high-level business and user requirements into functional requirements
  • Track requirements status throughout the project
  • Manage scope creep attributable to missed requirements and leakage of “unofficial” requirements into the project.
  • Troubleshoot, identify and resolve problems
  • Undertake/manage thorough acceptance testing of developments, new applications/systems
  • Help produce communications to users, develop communication plans and communicate development and progress to the Lawman Working Group
  • Assist in the evaluation of new software possibilities/choices
  • Produce cost/benefit analysis for new systems
  • Any other duties that may reasonably be required to ensure efficient operation of the service

Skills and experience


  • Project Management qualifications preferred e.g. PRINCE, AgilePM or similar

  • HND or above in computer science or business is recommended (alternatively, a significant IT aptitude must have been demonstrated in a previous role)

  • At least 3 years experience of undertaking a similar role in a professional services environment

  • Systems thinking skills, to be able to see the interactions and relationships between the people, processes, and technology involved in an environment
