The Role

We are looking for a HR Officer to join the HR&D Team at Baker McKenzie in London on a 12 month fixed term contract basis.  This is a great opportunity to deliver an outstanding operational HR service to assigned population(s) within the Firm. The role will support the HR Business Partners (HRBPs) in building and developing relationships within the business to collectively deliver a best in class service.
The role provides a great opportunity to develop a career in HR within a truly global law firm. The role offers a good level of client exposure and enables the job holder to add real value.  More recently the team have been  involved in a large volume of project work and are always eager to ensure the Officer population have real involvement and, where appropriate, encourage them to take the lead in project delivery.

Some previous HR experience is essential, preferably gained in the legal sector or other professional services.  In addition, we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to developing a career in HR in an advisory capacity, either through their studies or on-the-job training, experience or project work.  Relevant training and support would be provided to the successful candidate.

In particular, the role will include:

Operational Support

  • Providing advice to employees and managers on routine employee relations matters such as performance and capability, absence, disciplinary and grievance, changes to terms and conditions of employment, probation reviews and flexible working applications.
  • Co-ordinating the receiving and sending of secondees to and from the London office and to clients, liaising with key stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Managing the new joiner and leaver process, including New Qualifiers to Practice Group. For example, conducting new joiner meetings and exit interviews, processing leave of absence requests etc.
  • Handling new parent leave cases and their reintegration.
  • Participating in the smooth running of the annual performance and salary and bonus review.
  • Producing relevant paperwork, letters, contracts and reports for all of the above matters and ensuring that the HR Coordinator completes relevant notification(s) to support any payroll changes etc.
  • Providing support to the Recruitment team to enable them to deliver against the resourcing plan, for example, seeking appropriate approvals from Managing Partner or Support Head.
  • Leading or assisting with ad hoc project work.

HR Processes and Practices

  • Taking ownership for the end-to-end operational process to support key HR activities and optimising the efficiency and effectiveness of the process
  • Contributing to and taking ownership of the ongoing review of all HR operational processes.
  • Maintaining an overview of all processes, prioritising areas for improvement and working with the HR Coordinator to ensure successful implementation.

The Team

The team is made up of five HR Business Partners, three HR Officers and a Coordinator. We all support assigned populations across the office, including fee earners and business and secretarial services. We form part of the wider HR&D Team which includes Recruitment, ER & Reward, L&D and Diversity & CSR. 

Key Skills and Experience Required

  • Previous HR experience is essential, preferably within the legal sector or other professional services firms or within a corporate environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of operating within a HR Business Partner environment or generalist HR function.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of employment law, policies and procedures.
  • With guidance from HRBPs, ability to identify appropriate actions to resolve issues using well-defined policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and arrange own activities to accomplish objectives.
  • Ability to build rapport at all levels.
  • Strong delivery focus and attention to detail.
  • Collaborative approach, effectively working with others to achieve team success.
  • Respects and enjoys the diversity of cultural, social and academic backgrounds found in the Firm.
