The Role

We are looking for a Senior Business Development Manager to join our highly regarded Banking & Finance practice on a fixed term basis. Duties include:

Business Plans implementation

  • To provide assistance to the Department Managers, Business Manager and other relevant individuals in formulating and developing the business development action plans on the basis of agreed strategies.
  • Prompting partners/fee earners to achieve results and regularly monitoring and sharing progress against the plan.
  • Work with the Practice Business Manager to ensure the business development aspects of the plans are implemented.

Business Development

  • Coach partners and associates around consultative selling skills prior to client meetings.
  • Capture all deals for the purposes of cap statements, league tables, CVs, media coverage.
  • Support finance representation within the London Key Client Programme.
  • Take on a Key Account Management role for select clients.
  • Support panel tracking programme at a local level but also globally.
  • Capability statements - maintain update core capability statements.
  • CVs - ensure all fee earners have current CV's available in ppt and word formats

Pitch Management

  • For significant pitches and panel reviews, provide both strategic and practical input to the pitch process ensuring that teams follow 'best practice' in pitch development. This will include development of specific key messages, preparation and review of documents, development of innovative fee proposals, coaching and constructively challenging teams, dry-running proposal presentations etc.
  • Develop capability and positioning statements.
  • Carry out client facing post matter and post pitch debriefs.
  • Gather and disseminate key learnings from post pitch debriefs.
  • Input to Global and European pitches and panel reviews as necessary for UK content.
  • Input to the development and maintenance of pitch toolkits which have recently been developed to a very high level


Developing new business from existing and new clients within the client pipeline and targeting specific sectors (industry or practice specific) for increased revenue. Specific responsibilities are:

  • Work with relationship partner/s to identify opportunities and develop and implement business development initiatives.
  • Cross-selling - sharing information with other departments and practice groups or offices targeting the same clients.
  • Regularly reviewing the pipeline of targets to ensure that opportunities are prioritised and targeting efforts are focused on the greatest opportunities for developing business.
  • Research of clients, competitors and sectors to ensure that partners have the best available market intelligence to support targeting activities and that this intelligence informs decisions on the targeting programme generally

Client Reviews/Feedback

Obtaining systematic client feedback to enable a client focused approach to decision making, new product development and ongoing service excellence.  Supporting the Client Review Programme including:

  • Conduct matter reviews and post transaction debriefs with clients.
  • Conduct pre, during and post secondee interviews


Working closely with the marketing teams in London to lead and contribute towards delivering the marketing strategies of the practices at an office level and to support BD/Marketing colleagues across the network to support regional and global communications.


  • Leverage off office sponsorships and events identifying opportunities for the Finance Practice: eg Lords, LSO.
  • Co-ordinate with events team on both client seminars and corporate hospitality for clients of the Finance Practice

Internal Communications

Play a role in supporting internal profile raising and communications including making regular contributions to:

  • Practice based newsletters.
  • Commonground (Our internal magazine).
  • Practice based and central BD reports e.g. ongoing deals, new wins/clients, pitches.

External Communications

Take ownership of raising the external profile of the practice including:


  • Capturing and converting deals to media coverage.
  • Working with fee earners/PSLs and central marketing to identifying thought-leadership opportunities.


  • Identify and draft submissions for awards (legal and trade)

Directory Submissions

  • UK directory submissions - L500, Chambers, IFLR - draft and submit submissions and prep partners for interviews.
  • Contribution to European and Global submissions


  • Co-ordinate with central marketing team to keep  relevant pages updated, including partner CVs.


  • Liaise with in-house designer/Manila on the production and updating of  marketing literature, including all finance related collateral

Our Banking & Finance Practice comprises over 40 lawyers specialising in 15 distinct practice areas that best match the requirements of our global client base.

We also advise clients on enforcement situations, workouts and reorganisations and the full breadth of structured and capital markets offerings. Key Skills and Experience Required

  • An advanced degree (Bachelor or higher), preferably in business administration, marketing or communications.
  • Significant experience working in a professional services environment or a financial services institution, with experience leading Business Development/marketing for a transactional group, service line or financial services industry group.
  • Excellent client care skills with experience of client relationship management, including face to face meetings and events.
  • Strategic awareness of business and commercial issues.
  • First-rate oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues to people at all levels.
  • Strong writing, IT, analytical and numeracy skills.
  • Respects and enjoys the diversity of cultural, social and academic backgrounds found in the Firm.
