Practice management jobs in the legal sector, sometimes known as law practice managers or practice support directors are responsible for a range of management duties. Law practice managers may be from a fee earning background or from the business services/support side of a law firm. Legal practice managers, depending on the size of the firm can be responsible across sectors and disciplines such as human resources, legal risk and compliance, legal office administration and organisation, information technology, such as training and ordering new software / hardware, premises management, financial administration such as revenue and working capital or legal financial systems.

As can be seen from the diversity of responsibilities of roles and business areas above, a Legal practice manager tends to be the overall manager or operations director of a particular business unit –in the case of law firms this is usually designated by the area of law they are working in or fee earners they are supporting. While there are entry level roles in practice management, the senior practice managers of a law firm tend to have been promoted through the ranks in a certain are of the business such as finance or human resources. Thus, they also then are usually experts in that sector of the law firm business support services.
