A role in legal project management can be a wide an all-encompassing role working alongside fee earners, providing both strategic and operation support in the delivery of projects usually focused on a specific practice area. As project manager has the responsibility of the delivery of a project on time and on budget, they can be heavily involved in increasing efficiencies of processes and looking at new technologies and implementing the latest transformation and change in methods to effect efficiency.

While there are some very particular elements to legal project management, candidates can have a background in a cross section of professional services such as finance, accounting or banking. Due to the constant requirement to improve profitability of the law firm or legal practice, the most successful Legal project managers will be comfortable in challenging the status quo of working methods, championing process change and taking full responsibility for ‘making things work’.

When working in a project management role for the major international or US law firms, the role can include lots of cross boarder/international travel along with managing team communication amongst a diverse number of fee earning partners, client service departments such as pricing, bid and pitching, legal costs and directors of legal information services
